What are our thoughts on the year ahead?

01/Jan/2009

We were asked by the FPJ to think about what 2009 might have in store for the produce industry....

What will be the key internal and external factors to influence the fresh produce industry in 2009?

International money markets – they are influencing consumer confidence in every aspect of retailing

Internally – we need to manage quality and consistency of the supply of UK produce, we are now up there with the best in the world and we need to maintain that place in a very volatile market.  The management of costs and efficiencies to compete with market demands whilst aiming to make contributions to business and development

Will 2009 be a year to remember, and why? It will be one of the toughest trading periods in produce for many years, several companies will not make it and the landscape of our industry will look very different in 12 months time.

Are there any trends you think will be prevalent in the next 12 months?

As the marketplace becomes increasingly crowded and consumers continue to be bombarded with an excess of choice, brand loyalty will become even more valuable - those brands who want to succeed over the long-term need to properly engage with customers – for us that means local and British over imported produce.

Which areas of the fresh produce industry show the greatest potential for growth in 2009?  Home grown/local will continue to grow in popularity in the face of overseas food and health scares.  The identity of the producer will continue to grow as a key message as will the depth of knowledge of the health benefits of a diet rich in fresh produce

What is your New Year’s resolution for 2009? Keep calm and KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid)
